Integral or Channeled Art?

"Channeling is a contemporary term for the process in which a person transmits messages from a presumed discarnate source external to his or her consciousness—as, for example, through automatic writing, trance speaking, or reporting mental dictation. Often the source identifies itself a being from a non-physical reality, such as an angel or deity, a composite entity, an advanced being, or a formerly incarnate person."
- Institute of Noetic Sciences Review #1, Page 25, Winter 1986

Integral Art is defined to be as any artwork produced by an integrally aware consciousness. Easy right? But how does Integral Art measure up with artworks that are purported to be channeled from the spirit world? Consider the case of the famous Brazilian medium, Luis Antonio Gasparetto.

In the book More Encounters with the Unknown, Jaime T. Licauco interviewed this famous medium which seem to paint the works of great masters like Rembrandt, Renoir, Matisse, Picasso, Modigliani, Toulouse-Lautrec, in just minutes!

Here’s what Luis has to say about this unique mediumistic painting method:
(NOTE: The dialogues below are selected excerpts from the book More Encounters with the Unknown.)

JTL: When you are painting in a trance, are you aware of what you’re doing?

LAG: Yes, I’m always aware of what I’m doing.

JTL: Is there any reason why they have chosen painting in a trance as means of proving the existence of the spirit world?

LAG: Oh, yes. The spirits are really wise. They chose a medium or method which is difficult to merely dismiss as a trick, and yet extraordinary enough for people to stop and listen.
They could have chosen to give too much proof, like what some other psychics can do – materialization, for instance. A psychic opens his hands and a flower comes out. That can be done, but people can say it’s just trickery. It’s too incredible for people to accept as true. Or if they manifest themselves as an apparition, people say it’s just one’s imagination. Many people don’t believe in ghosts even if they see one.
So they chose something which is not impossible that people won’t believe and yet not too insignificant for people to simply ignore. They chose something that people can talk about, how this guy can paint under those seemingly impossible conditions. It is more convincing to see a person paint like this than to see a ghost or to see a materialization.

JTL: How do you go into trance? Do you call on the spirits to come?

LAG: I go into trance very fast. Actually this is something very delicate for me. I never know when I am in a trance and when I’m out of trance. Sometimes, I get in trance so lightly I don’t even know I’m in trance, and I do something while in that state. Later I look at what I’ve done and say to myself. “No, I couldn’t have done that, that’s not me.”
Sometimes I stay in a trance for a week. Being a psychic means being always in a trance, 24 hours a day. I mean, one is always a little bit out there, in an expanded state of awareness.

JTL: But are you able to control these shifts in consciousness?

LAG: Oh, Yes. I’m always in control. I’m always aware of what’s happening. For instance, if you are out there and I’m here, I can simply focus on you and I can perceive your feelings, your thoughts, or other levels of your being. I’m already in a trance at the time I do this.
The point is that there’s a part of my mediumship in which I’m active, and there’s another part in which I am passive and simply let things happen. Painting is an example. When the spirits approach me, they put me in a deep trance rather easy. I just focus and I’m there.
You know, there are various types of mediumship. Some have greater sensitivity with their eyes, other with their ears, and still others with their taste. Now, my mediumship is related to my skin. My skin is very sensitive to light and color. I can feel, smell and perceive with my skin. So my whole body becomes so sensitive that the spirits can do what they want me to do.

JTL: Do people around you affect your paintings?

LAG: Yes, If I’m around people who like me and are supportive of me, then the phenomenon is better.
A trance involves an expansion of your aura, and so the condition of the audience is reflected back to you and you feel this.
As you develop your personality and your level of awareness, the more you feel confident about yourself and begin to accept yourself as you are, when you begin to express yourself freely the way you are, then it won’t matter very much how people react to you.
For a psychic it is important to learn to extend his aura with ease and to express himself with ease. I know some psychics who have to exert themselves to be in a complete trance and they become unaware of what’s happening.

JTL: But isn’t that a better kind of mediumship, to be completely unconscious, because then you don’t contaminate the message with your own thoughts?

LAG: Oh, no! I don’t think this is good. If you are in a complete trance, you don’t learn anything. You should not allow the spirits to use you like this.
Why are we here on earth anyway, just to be used by the spirit without our knowledge? That’s foolish. I’m not a bag to be used. I have to grow. We have to use this talent for the good of man.

Assuming that Luis Gasparetto could really channel the spirits of master painters, how could we use the Integral lens to evaluate his artworks?

Let’s say Luis Gasparetto is NOT integrally aware, but the spirit he channeled is integrally aware, can the artwork be considered as Integral Art?

What if Luis Gasparetto is integrally aware, but the spirit he channeled is NOT integrally aware, can the artwork be considered as Integral Art?

Does the lens of Integral Art apply to channeled artworks such as, paintings, writings, music, etc? Or do channeled artworks have to be considered in a different category of their own?

Can the Comprehensive Theory of Subtle Energies explain the phenomenon of channeling?

To those who think they are integrally aware, or otherwise, take your shot.
